About Lucas
Hello. I’m Lucas.
I photograph the overlooked moments that give a place its character: the last light on an empty road, a lone supercell thunderstorm traversing the Midwest , the slow pause between destinations.
This archive brings together personal projects, travel blogs, and commissioned work.

SPRING AND SUMMER · FIELD GUIDE
Missouri Lightning Photography Guide
A practical field guide to photographing Missouri lightning while putting distance, shelter, and weather awareness ahead of the picture.
Choose safety before composition
Check the National Weather Service forecast before leaving, identify a substantial shelter, and keep an escape route open. A distant storm with a clear view can make a stronger photograph than a close storm that leaves no margin for error.
Prepare the camera before the storm
Start with a tripod, a clean lens, a charged battery, an empty memory card, and a weather cover. Manual focus near infinity is more reliable after dark; verify focus on a distant light and recheck it after moving the camera.
Balance exposure and timing
At night, begin with a low ISO, a stopped-down aperture, and a multi-second exposure, then adjust for the brightness and frequency of the lightning. In daylight, shorter exposures or a compatible lightning trigger can improve the chance of recording a strike without continuously firing the shutter.
Build a useful frame
Give the storm a sense of place with a horizon, road, field, or recognizable landscape. Keep the brightest part of the sky away from important highlights and leave room in the direction the storm is moving.
Finish with accurate context
Record the date, approximate location, direction of view, and any relevant warning information. Keep captions factual and avoid presenting a dramatic cloud feature as a tornado unless an authoritative source confirms it.
